The Hole, Sunken neighborhood between Brooklyn and Queens, United States

The Hole is a residential area between Brooklyn and Queens that sits roughly 30 feet (9 meters) below street level, forming a visible depression in the city. This sunken section spreads between East New York and Ozone Park and clearly separates the settlement from the surrounding neighborhood.

During the 1980s, authorities discovered several bodies in vacant lots connected to organized crime. These findings brought the area unwanted attention and shaped its reputation for many years.

The Federation of Black Cowboys keeps stables here and teaches children about African American cowboy traditions. This work preserves a part of American history rarely seen in city settings.

Residents rely on private drainage systems and pumps to cope with regular flooding, as the area remains unconnected to city sewage. Visitors should note that roads end at steep drops and that wet weather can affect access.

The elevation difference requires retaining walls around many houses and leaves roads ending abruptly at steep edges. This ground shift creates a visible border that clearly sets the neighborhood apart from the rest of the city.
