The facility opened in 1934 as the first medical center in America specifically designed for childhood tuberculosis treatment under architect Cass Gilbert's direction. It represented a pioneering approach to patient care by merging healthcare functions with residential design.

The building reflects early twentieth-century beliefs that sunlight and ocean air could help treat tuberculosis. Its design shows how people of that era thought nature could heal illness.

The structure operates today as part of a Connecticut State Park and can be explored on foot across its grounds. Designated parking areas provide easy access for visitors exploring the site.
