The Thirsty Whale, Rock music club in River Grove, Illinois.
The Thirsty Whale was a music club located at 8800 Grand Avenue in River Grove, hosting regular performances by local and touring bands in an intimate setting. The venue accommodated several hundred guests and became an established tour stop for metal and rock bands traveling through the Midwest.
The club opened in 1971 and quickly became a preferred venue for established acts including Blue Öyster Cult, Cheap Trick, and Alice In Chains. It closed in June 1996 after operating successfully for more than two decades.
During the 1980s, this venue became a central gathering place for Chicago's hard rock scene and gave emerging bands like Enuff Z'nuff and D'Molls their first chances to perform. Music fans came here regularly to experience local and touring acts up close.
The mid-sized venue could hold several hundred guests and was easily accessible for fans from the surrounding region. Note that the club has been closed for many years and exists now only in memories and historical records.
Mother Love Bone performed their only Chicago concert at this venue, highlighting its importance in the region's music history. The Illinois Rock and Roll Museum later recognized the club's place in that history.
