Trenton Bath House

The Trenton Bath House is a bath house with four square rooms arranged around an open central court, each topped with a wooden pyramidal roof. The building includes changing rooms designed with a gradual transition from public to private areas.

The building was designed and built by architect Louis Kahn between 1955 and 1959 as part of a Jewish Community Center that included an outdoor pool. This period reflected new thinking about how architecture could serve community needs in fresh ways.

This bath house serves as a gathering place for the Jewish community, where the clean geometric design reflects how a building shapes everyday use. The four rooms arranged around a central court create natural pathways for people to move through and gather together.

The facility is located at Lower Ferry Road where visitors can find it easily. The interior layout guides people gradually from public areas to private changing spaces, making it simple to move through the building.

The roof floats above the walls, creating gaps that let daylight stream through and cast shifting patterns on the concrete block surfaces. These light effects change throughout the day, giving the interior a constantly changing visual quality.
