Tweetsie Railroad, Theme park in Blowing Rock, North Carolina, United States
Tweetsie Railroad is a theme park in Blowing Rock, western North Carolina. The park combines historic steam locomotives with family rides and live entertainment on a mountain site.
Locomotive Number 12 was built in 1917 and operated on the East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad until 1940. After retirement, it was restored in the 1950s for the new theme park.
The name Tweetsie originates from local residents who created a verbal acronym of ET&WNC, referencing the sound of locomotive whistles in the mountains.
The park opens from April through October and features special events during Halloween and Christmas with seasonal entertainment. The railroad route runs through wooded terrain with some slopes, so comfortable footwear is recommended.
The on-site workshop maintains not only the park locomotives but also repairs steam engines for other facilities. This work helps preserve historic railroad technology across the region.
