United States lightship Ambrose
United States lightship Ambrose, Historic lightship museum at South Street Seaport, Manhattan, United States.
The Ambrose LV-87 lightship extends 135 feet in length with a steel hull and maintains its original maritime navigation equipment from 1907.
Built in Camden, New Jersey, for $99,000, this vessel guided ships through Ambrose Channel from 1908 to 1932, ensuring safe passage into New York Harbor.
The lightship directed over six million immigrants entering New York Harbor during the early 20th century, marking their final approach to Ellis Island.
Visitors can join 45-minute guided tours from Wednesday to Sunday between 11:30 AM and 3:30 PM at Pier 16 of South Street Seaport Museum.
In 1921, LV-87 became the first vessel in the United States to receive a radio beacon installation for navigation assistance during dense fog conditions.
