The development of the arboretum started in April 1990 under Dean Donal Myer's leadership, following environmental sciences professor Frank Kulfinski's initiative.
The arboretum functions as a living laboratory where students and researchers study plant science, horticulture, and conservation through hands-on experiences.
Visitors can access the gardens through Arboretum Lane and Cougar Lake Road, with free admission available during regular operating hours throughout the week.
The facility received recognition as one of three Signature Gardens designated by the Missouri Botanical Gardens in 2003, highlighting its regional importance.
