Astronomical Observatory, National Historic Landmark astronomical observatory at University of Illinois, Urbana, United States
The observatory features Colonial Revival architecture with a 35-foot-high dome and houses a 12-inch Brashear refractor telescope for astronomical observations.
Constructed in 1896 under the Illinois General Assembly funding, the facility gained National Historic Landmark status in 1989 after decades of scientific contributions.
The Department of Astronomy organizes regular open houses and educational programs, connecting students and visitors with astronomical research and celestial observations.
Located at 901 South Matthews Avenue, the observatory welcomes visitors during monthly public viewing sessions every third Friday, with additional group tours by appointment.
Joel Stebbins conducted the first electric measurements of lunar brightness during an eclipse in 1907 using selenium cell photometry technology at this facility.
