Wabash Heritage Trail, National Recreation Trail in Lafayette-West Lafayette, Indiana.
The Wabash Heritage Trail is a pathway that stretches roughly 13 miles from Tippecanoe Battlefield Park to Fort Ouiatenon, following Burnett Creek and the Wabash River for much of its length. The route passes through multiple parks and connects Lafayette and West Lafayette, featuring open riverside landscapes, wooded sections, and occasional urban passages.
The trail connects two historically important sites: the 1811 Battle of Tippecanoe and Fort Ouiatenon, an early trading post that stood at the boundary between Native and European worlds. The route thus traces paths that shaped the region's development for centuries.
The route links sites connected to Lenape peoples and early European settlement, reflecting how different communities shaped this region over time. Walking here, you notice how the river valleys and open spaces still carry traces of the people who lived here before modern times.
The path has several entry points with parking areas, including Davis Ferry Park, Lafayette Municipal Golf Course, Riehle Plaza, and Tapawingo Park. Keep in mind that some sections allow bicycles while others are for walking only, so check which part suits your planned activity before setting out.
Roughly half the route uses paved surfaces open to bicycles, while the other half remains foot-traffic only. This split allows cyclists and walkers to each experience their own sections without constant crossover between the two groups.
