Wells Fargo Building

The Wells Fargo Building is a 30-story skyscraper with a distinctive H-shaped profile above the fifth floor, clad in limestone and granite. It contains office space and is supported by massive steel girders that frame the banking hall below.

The building was completed in 1928 as the Fidelity-Philadelphia Trust Company Building, following a merger of two financial companies in 1926. It represents a key moment in Philadelphia's growth as a financial center during the interwar period.

The entrance features bronze doors and relief sculptures depicting commerce and civilization, showing what architects valued in the 1920s. These details reflect how financial institutions saw themselves and their role in the city.

The building stands prominently in Center City and is easy to spot thanks to its distinctive tower profile. You can view the entrance hall during business hours, though the upper floors are primarily offices not open to the public.

The banking hall is supported by six massive steel girders that ranked among the largest in the eastern United States when built. The floor beneath them is laid with cream-colored terrazzo marble, creating a striking contrast between industrial engineering and classical style.
