Wells Inn, Hotel in den Vereinigten Staaten
The Wells Inn is a historic hotel in Sistersville, West Virginia, built in 1895 by Ephraim Wells, grandson of town founder Charles Wells. The two-story brick building features a verandah, mosaic tile floors, a tiled fireplace, and oak furnishings from the 1890s that remain in place today.
Built in 1895 during the oil boom, the hotel served as one of the best accommodations between Wheeling and Parkersburg for both workers and wealthier travelers. It experienced cycles of prosperity and decline, suffered major damage from a severe winter storm in 1994, was restored by the Boyd family, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
The Wells Inn is named after its founder Ephraim Wells and reflects the role hospitality played in Sistersville's growth. The hotel brought together people from different backgrounds, from workers to wealthier travelers, creating a gathering place where the community intersected during the town's most active period.
The hotel is within walking distance of downtown Sistersville and offers a relaxed base for exploring nearby parks and shops in town. The quiet location encourages a leisurely pace, making it easy for visitors to access the hotel and enjoy the historic feel of the community.
After a severe winter storm caused major damage in 1994, the Boyd family rescued the hotel by restoring it and adding modern amenities like an indoor swimming pool and exercise room. This blend of historic architecture with contemporary facilities makes it a rare example of preserving old buildings while adding new purpose.
