Knowlton Covered Bridge, Covered bridge in Washington Township, US
Knowlton Covered Bridge crosses the Little Muskingum River with three spans and features protective roofing over its wooden structure. Two of its sections are currently not usable as work continues on restoration.
Construction took place in 1887, and the structure earned recognition on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Collapses of two sections beginning in 2019 prompted major restoration efforts.
The bridge shows how people in the nineteenth century protected wooden structures from weather using trusted methods of their time. Visitors can see how such construction worked and why roofing was essential for durability.
Access to the bridge is currently limited as sections are closed for repairs. Visitors should check ahead to learn which areas are open and how best to view the site safely.
The bridge uses the Burr arch truss design, a construction method that combined arches with a framework for added stability. This engineering approach proved effective for longer spans across rivers.
