Wissahickon Valley Park, National Natural Landmark and urban park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
This 1,800-acre protected natural area features dense woodlands, rocky terrain, waterfalls, and the Wissahickon Creek flowing through a deep gorge with mature forests of oak, maple, beech, and hemlock trees.
The Wissahickon Valley served as hunting grounds for the Lenape people before European settlement, and later became an industrial area with mills powered by the creek before being preserved as parkland in 1868.
The park has inspired numerous artists and writers throughout history and features monuments honoring both the Lenape Native Americans and early Quaker settlers who shaped the region's development.
Visitors can access multiple trail entrances including Northwestern Avenue, enjoy hiking on Forbidden Drive, and obtain permits for biking or horseback riding while visiting the historic Valley Green Inn for refreshments.
The park contains mysterious stone structures and caves that fuel local legends about hidden Native American artifacts and secret passages, attracting archaeological interest and ongoing exploration efforts.
