World's Largest Buffalo, Concrete buffalo sculpture in Jamestown, United States
The concrete and steel sculpture reaches 26 feet in height, extends 46 feet in length, and weighs 60 tons atop a hill near Interstate 94.
Commissioned by businessman Harold Newman in 1959, sculptor Elmer Petersen created this monument with the help of local construction workers for 8,500 dollars.
The statue represents the strong connection between North Dakota and the American bison, leading to Jamestown's designation as The Buffalo City.
Located at 404 17th Street SE in Jamestown, the monument offers free access throughout the year and includes paved pathways for wheelchair accessibility.
In 2010, after a contest that gathered 3,500 submissions, the sculpture received its official name Dakota Thunder, proposed by Michael Shirek.
