Yost Ice Arena, hockey arena in Ann Arbor, Michigan
Yost Ice Arena is an ice hockey venue on the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor. It has seating for several thousand spectators and a full-size ice surface used for competitive games, team training, and public skating sessions.
The building opened in 1923 as Yost Field House and was built to serve multiple sports at once. It was converted into a dedicated ice arena in 1973 and has hosted the university's hockey teams ever since.
The name honors Fielding Yost, a legendary football coach from the early 1900s. Today the arena serves as a gathering place where students and fans create an energetic environment during hockey games.
The arena is open from fall through spring, and hours change depending on the game schedule and university events. It is worth checking current public skating times in advance, as they can vary from week to week.
Although the arena carries the name of football coach Fielding Yost, it was officially renamed in 2017 to also honor Red Berenson, a former player who went on to coach the hockey program for decades. This makes it one of the few sports venues named after figures from two different sports.
