United Hebrews of Ocala

United Hebrews of Ocala, Carpenter Gothic synagogue in Tuscawilla Park Historic District, Ocala, United States

United Hebrews of Ocala is a wood-frame structure featuring Carpenter Gothic design located on Northeast 2nd Street in Ocala, Florida. The building displays the characteristic craftsmanship of this architectural style through its decorative wooden details and pointed arch elements typical of the period.

The structure was built in 1888 to serve the local Jewish congregation and remained their religious home for many decades. In 1976 the building changed hands, passing to Christian organizations that continued to use it for worship and community activities.

The congregation built this place to establish Jewish life in Florida, creating a physical center for their religious practices and community gatherings. The wooden structure shows how people adapted architectural styles available to them to express their faith in the developing American South.

The building sits within the Tuscawilla Park Historic District near downtown Ocala and can be found along Northeast 2nd Street in that area. Since this is a private religious building, access may be limited and visitors should check ahead before planning a visit.

This building ranks among the earliest synagogues in America built in the Carpenter Gothic style, an unusual choice for a Jewish place of worship during that time. The architectural decision shows how the congregation drew from local building traditions to create their religious home.
