Silver Springs State Park, State park in Marion County, United States.
Silver Springs State Park is a protected area in Marion County, Florida, built around several large artesian springs. The water rises from underground limestone caverns to the surface, forming the headwaters of the Silver River.
The springs attracted visitors from the 1820s, when steamboats brought tourists to see the natural formations. By the 1870s, the site had grown into an early tourist destination in Florida.
The name comes from the silvery appearance of the water, created by light reflecting through the clear spring flow. Visitors watch alligators, turtles, and wading birds along the shoreline and boardwalks.
The two entrances are several miles apart, so plan which activity you want before arriving. The main spring area is good for day trips, while the camping section is quieter.
Glass bottom boats glide over the springs, offering views of ancient limestone formations about 80 feet (24 meters) below the surface. Through the transparent floors, you can see fish swimming among the rocks and occasional submerged objects from earlier eras.
