Mackay Estate Gate Lodge, Historic gatehouse in East Hills, New York.
The Mackay Estate Gate Lodge is a gatehouse in East Hills, New York, featuring a central entrance with flanking pavilions and a steep slate roof with pyramidal design. The structure combines practical gatehouse function with elaborate architectural detailing.
Stanford White of McKim, Mead & White designed this French Baroque gatehouse in 1899, with construction completed between 1900 and 1902. It was part of a grand estate built during the era of wealthy family compounds on Long Island.
The gate lodge displays French Baroque style elements that were incorporated into American architecture around 1900, reflecting the grandeur of the original estate.
The building stands in a residential neighborhood and is visible from exterior viewpoints, though interior access is limited. Roof restoration work was undertaken from 2022 onward to stabilize the structure.
The building is one of only three remaining structures from the original Harbor Hill Estate to receive National Register listing. This rarity makes it an important survivor from the era of grand Long Island estates.
