Mackay Estate Water Tower
Mackay Estate Water Tower, Historic water tower in East Hills, New York.
Mackay Estate Water Tower in East Hills rests on eight legs about 34 feet tall and features a round tank wrapped in stone. The bell-shaped slate roof sits at the top of this distinctive structure.
The architectural firm McKim, Mead & White designed this tower in 1902 as part of Clarence Mackay's Harbor Hill Estate. It came from an era when such structures still received artistic treatment.
The structure shows an early approach to decorative water storage with stone and copper details that catch the eye. Walking past it, you notice how practical engineering was combined with artistic touches.
The tower sits between Lincoln Drive and Lufberry Drive on Redwood Drive and works as a reference point for finding your way around. You can see it clearly from the street and examine the architectural details from nearby.
The tower uses a Guastavino tile dome, an advanced building method from the early industrial period. This rare construction technique shows the technical skill behind the project.
