Millbrook School, private, coeducational secondary school, Millbrook, New York
Millbrook School is a boarding school in Stamford, New York, located on a large rural campus with nine dormitories serving grades nine through twelve. The school maintains small classes of about eleven students with a four-to-one teacher-to-class ratio for personalized instruction.
Founded in 1931 by Edward Pulling, a graduate of Princeton and Cambridge, the school was established in a quiet countryside location. The on-campus zoo began in 1936 under biology teacher Frank Trevor and was renamed the Trevor-Lovejoy Zoo in 2025 to honor graduate Dr. Thomas Lovejoy's conservation work.
The school's motto, 'Not for oneself, but for all,' shapes how students interact with each other and their environment daily. This principle is visible in how students help with zoo care and participate in community projects that benefit others.
The campus spans about 800 acres and is best explored on foot to appreciate the rural setting and dormitory buildings. Visits are most rewarding during open campus days or scheduled school events when you can observe student life and community activities.
It is home to the only zoo located inside a high school in the United States, housing about 170 animals from around the world. Students participate directly in animal care and conservation efforts, making it an unusual educational resource on campus.
