First United Presbyterian Church
First United Presbyterian Church, Historical church in Madison, United States.
First United Presbyterian Church at 104 E. 4th Street features Romanesque Revival design with rounded arches and thick stone walls that define its exterior. The interior space was originally designed to seat about 350 people in a layout typical of religious buildings from that era.
A Presbyterian congregation started in Madison in 1870 under Reverend Sheldon Jackson with regular worship services. The current building was completed in 1914 to serve the growing community.
Today the building hosts concerts, theatrical performances, and art exhibitions that bring together Madison residents. This community use shows how a former church has become a gathering place for people interested in culture and the arts.
The building sits in central Madison and is easy to reach on foot from nearby streets. Visitors can examine the architecture and view historical displays during visiting hours.
After the congregation moved away, local citizens formed Preservation Madison Inc to save and operate the building as a community center. This grassroots effort shows how dedicated volunteers can give new life to buildings that might otherwise be lost.
