Chittenango Falls State Park
Chittenango Falls State Park, Natural state park in Madison County, New York.
The 193-acre park centers around a 51-meter waterfall that flows over limestone bedrock formed 400 million years ago during the Devonian period.
The New York State Office of Parks acquired the land in 1922 following the efforts of Helen Fairchild and the Chittenango Falls Park Association.
The waterfall marked a territorial boundary between Oneida and Onondaga nations, who referred to it as a place where water runs over rocks.
The gorge trail leads visitors to a wooden footbridge at the base of the falls, offering close views while protecting the sensitive ecological environment.
The park contains the only habitat of the Chittenango ovate amber snail, an endangered species that exists nowhere else in the world.
