Camp Houlton, Former prisoner-of-war camp in Houlton, Maine.
Camp Houlton was a prisoner-of-war facility on the grounds of the former Houlton Army Air Base near the Canadian border. The site contained multiple military buildings and infrastructure that were eventually repurposed for the airport now operating there.
The camp was established in 1944 and held over 1,100 German prisoners until May 1946. Its operation was part of the broader American strategy for managing Axis prisoners during and after World War II.
German prisoners worked on local farms and interacted with Houlton residents, creating unexpected human connections between the community and wartime detainees. These encounters showed how ordinary people on both sides could find common ground despite the conflict surrounding them.
The location now serves as Houlton International Airport with runways and facilities for private and commercial aviation. Visitors should note that the site is on an active airport, so access to certain areas may be restricted.
In September 2003, former German prisoners returned for a memorial ceremony, transforming a wartime facility into a place of reconciliation. This reunion highlighted how a site of captivity could become a symbol of healing and restored human bonds.
