New Hampton, Ohio, Historical settlement in Madison County, Ohio.
New Hampton was a small settlement in Madison County that was laid out in 1822 with 93 lots across eight streets. Today only a cemetery and a section of the original Main Street remain visible at coordinates 39.9396°N and 83.2688°W.
The settlement was founded in 1822 and served as an active trading hub with several businesses, a Baptist church, and a post office. After the National Road was built north of the village, residents moved toward this new transportation route and the settlement declined.
The Baptist congregation formed the heart of community life and maintained worship here until 1840, when they moved to a new church in Jefferson. This shift shows how religious institutions shaped the social fabric of frontier settlements.
The site is relatively open and can be explored on foot, with the cemetery and street remains easily accessible. There is minimal infrastructure on site, so a visit works best as part of a broader exploration of the region.
The settlement was eventually absorbed into the growing town of West Jefferson, where it lost its separate identity. Interestingly, the cemetery and a fragment of the original street survived and today stand as quiet reminders of this forgotten community.
