Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City, Coast Guard station in Traverse City, Michigan
Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City is an air facility at Cherry Capital Airport on the southern end of Grand Traverse Bay in northern Michigan. The base operates three MH-60T Jayhawk helicopters that respond to search and rescue calls across the region.
The station was founded in 1945 as a small detachment with a single aircraft and expanded over the following years. It gradually became an important rescue center serving the Great Lakes region.
The station participates in the National Cherry Festival Airshow, where it offers the public tours and demonstrations of rescue operations. For many visitors, this is a rare chance to see modern helicopters up close and learn about maritime safety work.
The facility is located at 1175 Airport Access Road and is accessible from downtown Traverse City. Access to the base is generally restricted except during special public events and demonstrations.
In 1986, medical personnel aboard an aircraft successfully delivered a premature baby during an emergency evacuation flight. This remarkable moment reflects the station's critical role in saving lives beyond traditional water-based rescue.
