Ashford Lake, body of water

Ashford Lake is a small, shallow body of water in eastern Ashford, Connecticut, covering about 53 acres and reaching a maximum depth of about 40 feet (12 meters). A dam built in 1949 across Goss Brook holds back the water, and the lake is surrounded by residential areas with a small beach on the southeastern side, while native water plants like water lilies and pondweeds grow beneath the surface.

The lake was created in 1949 when an earthen dam was completed across Goss Brook, allowing water from streams and springs to collect behind it. In 2018, a rare EF0 tornado touched down near the area, bringing strong winds that knocked down trees and damaged some homes but caused no serious injuries.

The lake serves as a private gathering place for residents and their guests, reflecting how people in the area spend quiet time together. Simple activities like fishing, walking along the shore, and watching the water and wildlife show how locals connect with this small body of water as part of their daily rhythm.

The lake is private and only accessible to residents and their guests, with a small beach on the southeastern side for swimming during warmer months. Small electric-powered boats are permitted, but there are no boat launches for larger vessels, and gasoline engines are not allowed on the water.

The lake hosts a surprising variety of underwater plants, including carnivorous bladderworts that trap tiny insects for nutrients, making it an interesting spot for observing aquatic life. White water lilies with their broad leaves floating on the surface in summer add color and provide shade for fish and insects below.
