St. Joachim Church, Philadelphia, Catholic church in Frankford, Philadelphia, United States
St. Joachim Church is a 19th-century Catholic church building on Church Street in the Frankford neighborhood of Philadelphia. The building features a bell tower visible from the surrounding streets and is attached to a cemetery that is now managed by Holy Innocents Parish.
The church was founded in 1887 as the first Roman Catholic parish in Northeast Philadelphia. At the time, the area was on the edge of the city and the new congregation helped anchor the growing neighborhood.
The church was founded for the German-speaking community of Frankford, and its name honors the father of the Virgin Mary, venerated as a saint in Catholic tradition. Many headstones in the adjoining cemetery still carry German inscriptions, reflecting the origins of the first congregation.
The church building is no longer used for services, but the adjoining cemetery can be visited during certain hours. It is worth checking in advance, as the grounds are managed by the Archdiocese and access may vary.
Although the building has not been used for worship in years, the structure and bell tower have remained largely intact. The cemetery contains graves from the earliest decades of the parish, when this part of Philadelphia was still largely rural.
