Philip H. Sheridan School, Schule in den Vereinigten Staaten
Philip H. Sheridan School is a three-story stone and brick school building in Philadelphia designed in Colonial Revival style. Built around 1900 with wings added in 1902 and 1910, it features large Palladian windows with multiple panes that flood the classrooms with natural light.
The building was constructed around 1900 and named after General Philip Sheridan, a Civil War leader. In 1988, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its significance in American history.
The school was renamed in 2022 to Gloria Casarez Elementary School, honoring a civil rights advocate who grew up in the surrounding North Philadelphia neighborhood. This change came through community voting and reflects a commitment to inclusivity and respect for all.
The school is located in the Kensington neighborhood at East Ontario Street and is easy to find among the historic streets and older buildings of the area. Visitors can view the sturdy construction and classical design from the outside while respecting the working school environment.
The building was originally named after a Civil War general but was renamed in 2022 to honor a local civil rights activist. This change shows how historic places can evolve and take on new meaning within their community.
