Green Tree Tavern

The Green Tree Tavern is a two-story brick building located at the corner of East Girard Avenue and Marlborough Street in Philadelphia. The structure features typical 19th-century commercial design with window openings and masonry work that define both its public and private spaces.

The building was constructed in 1845 and opened its doors as a public house in 1849, operating continuously through generations of owners. Its function shifted away from hospitality in 2012 when the space was converted to serve a different purpose.

This former tavern reflects how neighborhood gathering places were designed and used in 19th-century Philadelphia, with commercial space below and residential rooms above. The building shows visitors what everyday commercial life looked like in this working-class area during that era.
