Fountain Inn High School, high school in Fountain Inn, South Carolina, United States
Fountain Inn High School is a 1939 school building in Fountain Inn, South Carolina, designed in the Moderne style with clean lines and simple forms. The two-story L-shaped structure with a basement features a large auditorium seating 800, tall windows providing natural light, art deco ceiling panels, and a prominent entrance marked by a wide concrete portico.
Built in 1939 by Greenville architects Beacham and LeGrand, the structure exemplifies New Deal-era public construction meant to create jobs and support communities during economic hardship. After 1957, it transitioned to serve as an elementary school until 1997, then became an arts center when the town purchased it in 1999.
The building reflects the civic pride of its era, serving as a gathering place where the community came together for school events, plays, and assemblies that shaped local life. The auditorium, with its art deco details, hosted performances and public gatherings that connected residents across generations.
The building is privately owned and not regularly open to visitors, so check in advance whether tours are available and respect the owner's privacy. You can view the exterior facade and architectural details from the street to appreciate the building's design elements without needing interior access.
The auditorium with its 800 seats featured hardwood floors, art deco ceiling patterns, and engineered acoustics that made it a state-of-the-art performance space for its time. Today the building is known as the Younts Center for Performing Arts after a 2013 renaming, and has undergone significant renovations that updated the theater and lobby.
