Peabody Preserve, Nature preserve in Sleepy Hollow, US.
Peabody Preserve is a nature reserve in Sleepy Hollow covering about 39 acres between the Hudson River and Fremont Pond. The landscape includes wetlands, forests, an apple orchard, and offers river views from several vantage points.
From the early 1900s until the 1960s, this land contained a brick factory that manufactured building materials using clay extracted from the site. After the factory closed, the land was restored and converted into a public nature preserve.
The preserve serves as a living classroom where local schools and environmental groups conduct field studies and observe the ecosystems directly. This educational role has shaped how people in the area connect with and understand their natural surroundings.
A network of trails connects different areas within the preserve for visitors to explore at their own pace. The paths are clearly marked and offer varying difficulty levels for different experience preferences.
The preserve contains both freshwater and saltwater wetlands side by side, a rare combination that creates unusually diverse wildlife habitats. This contrast allows visitors to experience two distinctly different ecosystems in a single location.
