B&O Railroad Headquarters Building, Beaux-Arts office building in Business and Government Historic District, Baltimore, US.
The B&O Railroad Headquarters Building is a 13-story granite structure featuring seven types of marble from six different countries. Inside, white marble staircases and Bedford stone blend European craftsmanship with American architectural design.
Following the Great Baltimore Fire of 1904, the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad built this new headquarters, completed in 1906. Designed by architects Parker and Rogers, it marked the district's recovery after that disaster.
Two entrance sculptures depict different aspects of rail transport: Mercury represents commerce while Progress shows technological innovation. These works reflect how important the railroad was to the city's identity.
The building now operates as Hotel Monaco with 202 guest rooms and houses the B&O American Brasserie restaurant. Visitors can explore public areas or stay as guests within the historic spaces.
The structure was a groundbreaking rebuilding project that brought together international materials and local craftsmanship to create a new center for the business district. This combination made it an example of how a city could recover its economic strength after disaster.
