AN/FPQ-16 PARCS

The AN/FPQ-16 PARCS is a phased array radar system at Cavalier Space Force Station with an octagonal structure measuring 30 meters across and facing north toward Hudson Bay. It contains 6,144 active antenna elements working together to detect orbiting objects.

Operations began in 1975 as part of the Stanley R. Mickelsen Safeguard Complex for missile defense purposes. The facility later transitioned to Space Force control and now focuses on monitoring space-related threats instead of its original anti-ballistic role.

Military personnel from the United States and Canada collaborate directly at this facility on shared defense responsibilities. This cooperation reflects the close relationship between the two nations in continental security matters.

This facility is located in a remote area of North Dakota and is not open to the public for visits. It remains a secure military installation with restricted access, so the site should be viewed only from designated public areas if available.

The installation includes an underground power plant with five dual-fuel engines providing independent electricity generation. This self-sufficient design ensures the radar system can operate continuously without relying on external power sources.
