Elkinton-Butcher House, Colonial residence in Mauricetown, New Jersey, United States.
The Elkinton-Butcher House is a 2.5-story federal style brick building with classical architectural details and Flemish bond brickwork on its facade. A modern screened porch was added to the structure to meet contemporary living needs.
George Elkinton built the house in the late 1700s after acquiring land rights in the 1790s, establishing it in Mauricetown. Dr. Joseph Butcher purchased the property in 1846 and converted it into his medical practice headquarters.
The house functioned as both a home and doctor's office where physicians and their families lived and worked together for generations. The layout shows how completely the medical practice integrated into daily family life.
The house is part of the Mauricetown Historic District, which was registered in 2017 and is open for public viewing. Plan time to explore the different rooms and their original purposes when you visit.
Original medical equipment storage areas remain intact in the downstairs rooms of the house. These elements offer a rare glimpse into how early 1800s medical practices were organized within a home.
