Lake Milton State Park is an Ohio state park in Lake Milton built around a large reservoir on the Mahoning River. The grounds include a sandy beach, boat ramps, picnic areas, walking and biking trails, an archery range, and a disc golf course overlooking the water.
The lake was created in 1917 when a dam was built on the Mahoning River to reduce flooding in the surrounding area. The state park was established later to open the land to public recreation.
The Storybook Trail near the swimming beach displays pages from a children's book along the path, so kids can follow the story as they walk. The trail is connected to Dolly Parton's Imagination Library program, which gives it a character that sets it apart from most park trails.
The east side of the lake is the most accessible hub for water activities, with boat ramps, rentals, and picnic facilities close together. Some amenities are only open during warmer months, so it helps to check ahead before planning a visit.
The park has a public archery range on the east side of the dam, open to casual visitors as well as those who practice regularly. In designated areas, hunting with a valid license is also permitted during certain seasons, which is uncommon for a recreation-focused state park.
