Austintown Log House
Austintown Log House, Historic log house in Mahoning County, United States.
The Austintown Log House is a two-story residential building in Mahoning County built using traditional log stacking methods that represent early American rural construction. The structure consists of thick timber pieces laid horizontally and still shows these original logs, even though modern additions were built around it later.
The building was constructed in 1814 and remained hidden beneath modern additions until workers uncovered it in 1973 during renovation work at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. This discovery allowed the original structure to be recognized and eventually preserved.
The house reveals how early Ohio settlers lived and constructed their homes, with preserved craft details and furnishings from that era. You can observe the practical choices they made and the building knowledge they applied.
The site is open during the visiting season from March through December, typically with guided tours available on specific dates. It helps to check exact opening times in advance and expect a historic building without modern conveniences.
The building vanished from sight for more than 150 years, completely buried beneath newer structures, until demolition work accidentally exposed its original form. This unexpected rediscovery made it possible to rescue one of the oldest homes in the area.
