Pierson Ranch Recreation Area, Protected recreation area in Yankton County, South Dakota, US
Pierson Ranch Recreation Area is a protected outdoor space with 67 campsites and 2 camping cabins situated below Gavins Point Dam along Lake Yankton. The grounds span 60 acres and offer both electrical and non-electrical camping options directly on the water.
This recreation area was established in 1959 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as the first campground following completion of Gavins Point Dam. Management passed to South Dakota in 2001, marking a shift in local operations.
The area draws visitors year-round who enjoy fishing for walleye and northern pike, and the open water attracts bird watchers during migration seasons. Local families use the grounds for weekend getaways and outdoor celebrations along the shoreline.
The grounds feature restroom facilities, showers, and water hookups at most campsites, with services available year-round. Visitors should arrive early during peak summer months and be prepared for colder conditions if visiting in winter.
This location sits between two larger recreation areas and provides direct access to one of the region's best fishing spots for northern pike and walleye. The strategic positioning makes it a favorite rest stop for boaters exploring the Missouri River.
