Putuoshan

Putuoshan is a Buddhist island within the Zhoushan Archipelago in Zhejiang Province, home to thirty major temples including Puji, Fayu, and Huiji shrines. The island spans several square kilometers and features religious structures that have been carefully built across centuries.

The island became a Buddhist center during the Song Dynasty when the first temple was established in its early period. This founding event marked the beginning of a long religious tradition that continues to the present day.

The temples here draw Buddhist practitioners and visitors from surrounding regions who come to pray and participate in religious ceremonies throughout the year. This convergence of people from different places creates a living center where spiritual traditions continue to be actively practiced.

Visitors reach the island by ferry from nearby port cities, as private vehicles are not permitted to preserve the environment. Getting around happens on foot or by local transport, which makes exploring the terrain a peaceful experience.

A large coastal cave on the island generates natural echoes when seawater rushes in with tidal movements, creating a resonant phenomenon. The interplay of water and rock has given this place a mysterious quality throughout time.
