Himmerod Abbey

Himmerod is a Benedictine monastery with a Baroque church completed in 1751. The grounds also feature museum spaces, an art shop, and a traditional fish farming operation.

The monastery was founded in 1135 by Bernard of Clairvaux as a direct branch of Clairvaux Abbey. This establishment began centuries of monastic work and religious life in the region.

The monastery served as a spiritual center for the region, and its name reflects the heavenly focus of monastic life. Today visitors can still sense this religious function through how the buildings are arranged and used.

The monastery sells handcrafted products like beer, liqueur, mustard, and honey in its shop throughout the year. Visitors can take their time exploring the different areas of the grounds.

The monastery has run a fish farm for centuries, which still supplies fresh catch to its restaurant today. This long tradition shows how the community sustained itself while maintaining historical practices.
