Kocher Viaduct, Road bridge in Baden-Württemberg, Germany

Kocher Viaduct is a road bridge over a valley in Baden-Württemberg, built from prestressed concrete and stretching over one kilometer. The structure consists of nine sections resting on tall concrete pillars that carry traffic high above the landscape.

Construction was completed in the late seventies, creating a key link on the A81 motorway through southern Germany. Completion allowed faster travel routes between several regions that were previously separated by difficult terrain.

The name refers to the Kocher River, which flows through the valley far below the roadway. Drivers crossing the span often pass without realizing how far above the water they travel.

Drivers heading south on the A81 cross the structure between Gerabronn and Schwäbisch Hall. The view into the valley remains mostly limited to the immediate roadway area due to guardrails and typical driving speed.

The clearance of 185 meters (607 feet) above the valley floor makes this the tallest valley bridge in Germany. That height roughly equals a 60-story building, though travelers hardly sense the distance from the roadway.
