Eisleben, Historic town in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.
Eisleben is a town in the Mansfeld-Südharz district of Saxony-Anhalt, recognized as the birthplace and final resting place of Martin Luther. The center gathers several churches, market squares, and half-timbered houses around a compact historic core, while surrounding streets slope gently into rolling countryside.
Martin Luther entered the world here on November 10, 1483, and returned in February 1546 to deliver his final sermons before dying in the same town. The Reformation shaped the place through these twin events, turning it into a pilgrimage destination for Protestants across Europe.
The twin churches of St Petri-Pauli and St Andreas anchor the town's spiritual life, preserving the pulpits and baptismal fonts where Luther preached and was baptized. Local congregations still gather in these same halls, keeping alive the Reformation tradition in daily worship.
A walking route connects the main Luther memorial sites within the town center, easy to complete in a few hours on foot. Most buildings sit close together, so visitors with limited mobility can reach the key points without much effort.
The Wiesenmarkt festival opens every September and has run without interruption since 1521, making it one of the oldest continuing folk celebrations in Germany. Thousands of guests gather on the festival meadows, where rides, beer tents, and market stalls keep the centuries-old tradition alive.
