Das Kartoffelmuseum

Das Kartoffelmuseum is a museum in Munich devoted to the potato and its history. Eight exhibition rooms display paintings, engravings, drawings, and objects documenting cultivation and consumption of this vegetable across different periods.

The museum was founded in 1996 by Otto Eckart following the sale of the Pfanni food company to Unilever. It was established on the grounds of the former factory, transforming an industrial space into a place for cultural preservation.

The exhibits display artworks dedicated to potatoes, including oil paintings, watercolors, and glass paintings that show how artists have drawn inspiration from this vegetable. These pieces tell the story of how potatoes became important to European culture and imagination.

Visits are possible during business hours, and the building is fully accessible for wheelchair users. It helps to allow time for browsing the exhibitions, as the rooms contain substantial material to review.

The collection includes a reproduction photograph of Marilyn Monroe standing in a potato field wearing a burlap dress, merging celebrity culture with agriculture. This unusual image shows how potatoes reached into twentieth-century popular culture.
