Schloss Altenkirchen, Castle in Altenkirchen (Westerwald), Germany
Schloss Altenkirchen was a castle complex with five wings that housed various functions such as stables, prison cells, guest rooms, a blacksmith workshop, and residential quarters for nobility. The entire structure was built upon the foundations of an earlier fortress and formed a unified complex in the city center.
The fortress was built in 1314 and transformed into a castle in 1586 using the original foundations. In 1862 the structure was demolished and the site became a public square for city events.
The castle served as the residence of local nobility for centuries and shaped the community's identity for generations. Visitors can still observe traces of this connection near the parish church, which had direct access to the noble residence.
The castle no longer exists but the town square at its former location is easy to find and serves as a central gathering place in the city center. To visit, explore the area and observe the nearby church which still shows traces of its historical connection to the former residence.
The castle complex operated its own mint facility where coins were produced for the region. This detail reveals how economically and politically important the residence was to the surrounding area.
