Gasometer, Gas holder in Lübeck, Germany.
The Gasometer in Lübeck is a 70-meter-tall cylindrical steel structure built with a movable piston system. This industrial building was designed to store and regulate gas supply while balancing fluctuations across the local distribution network.
The structure was built in 1954 by the Klönne company and initially stored town gas produced from coal. Between 1965 and 1969, the facility transitioned to natural gas, which fundamentally changed its operational purpose.
The structure stood as a monument of industrial engineering until 2021, when the city authorities removed its protected status due to maintenance costs.
The structure is visible from the outside and shows the typical form of a gas storage facility. You can best photograph the large silhouette while walking through the industrial areas surrounding it.
This was the last operating disk gas holder in Schleswig-Holstein before being decommissioned in 2015. After shutdown, the facility was covered with protective coverings to preserve the industrial monument.
