Museum für Naturkunde Gera

Museum für Naturkunde Gera is a natural history museum housed in a historic building that displays minerals, plants, and animals from East Thuringia. The collection spans three floors and provides an overview of the region's geological features and biological diversity.

The building was constructed between 1686 and 1688 as the Schreibersches Haus and is one of the few structures that survived the great fire of 1780. Its survival makes it an important record of Gera's urban history.

The museum displays local species and plants from the surrounding region, helping visitors understand the nature that exists in their own area. Walking through the rooms, you see how the landscape and wildlife of East Thuringia are interconnected.

The museum is open from Wednesday to Sunday starting in the early afternoon and features changing exhibitions on the ground floor. Since the building spans multiple floors, you should allow time for exploring each level, and comfortable shoes are recommended.

The basement holds a mineral collection with specimens from around the world, extending beyond just local stones. For those wanting to explore nature further, a botanical garden with about 300 regional plant species stands just three minutes away on foot.
