Scharfenstein

Scharfenstein is a basalt cone rising 304 meters (1000 feet) above sea level in the Schwalm-Eder district of northern Hesse. The formation displays the typical shape of a volcanic peak that stands out distinctly from the surrounding landscape.

The mountain formed during the Tertiary period through volcanic eruptions that deposited basalt across the Schwalm-Eder landscape. These geological events created the distinctive cone shape and rock composition visible today.

The summit shapes how local residents perceive their region and appears in symbols that represent the Schwalm-Eder area. Its distinctive outline serves as a landmark that people recognize and remember when thinking of their home.

Marked trails from the town of Gudensberg lead to the summit and connect with regional hiking networks for longer routes. The paths are generally walkable year-round, though conditions are easiest during drier seasons.

The basalt rock creates habitat for plant species that grow exclusively on volcanic formations and nowhere else in the region. These specialized plants reveal the mountain's volcanic past through the living plants that thrive on its slopes.
