Steinsburgmuseum, Archaeological museum in Römhild, Germany
Steinsburgmuseum is an archaeological museum in Römhild that displays finds from the Middle Stone Age through the High Middle Ages. The five exhibition rooms present objects from the South Thuringia region, including tools, pottery, and jewelry from different peoples and periods.
The museum was founded in 1929 by Christian Heurich and is based on finds from the nearby Steinsburg, a Celtic fort. This fort was inhabited from the 5th to the 1st century BC and shows the long settlement history of the region.
The museum's name comes from the nearby Steinsburg fortification, whose remains and graves continue to shape how we understand this region. Visitors see in the exhibition rooms how people lived here across thousands of years and left their marks behind.
The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday between 09:00 and 17:00, with partial wheelchair accessibility throughout the building. It is best to check current opening hours before visiting, as exceptions can occur.
The museum collection is connected to one of the largest Iron Age burial mound fields in Thuringia, containing nine excavated mounds at Merzelbachwald. These mounds offer rare insights into burial practices and social structures from that distant time.
