Wasserburg Rohr, Medieval castle ruins in Rohr district, Stuttgart, Germany
Wasserburg Rohr was a water castle surrounded by a defensive moat, of which a flat mound measuring about 22 meters across and the ditch remains visible today. The site sits within Rohrer Park and preserves the physical traces of this medieval fortification.
The castle was first recorded in 1287 and served the Lords of Rohr, a noble family who held the land as vassals of the Counts of Tübingen. Over time the fortress lost importance and was eventually abandoned.
Excavations at the site uncovered wall fragments, roof tiles, and everyday objects from medieval times that show who lived here and how people spent their days. These finds tell the story of a prosperous household and its role in the district's early settlement.
The site is located in Rohrer Park and is easily reached on foot by heading west along Schönbuchstraße through the grounds. The surroundings are flat and open, making for a straightforward visit.
Two historical boundary stones marked with the letter R still mark the territory once controlled by this medieval family and link the fortress to the modern district name. These modest markers show how local boundaries can endure across centuries.
