Dalherda Kuppe

Dalherda Kuppe, Mountain summit in Hesse, Germany

Description

Dalherda Kuppe is a mountain summit in the Rhön region rising to 800.6 meters, featuring steep slopes and natural rock formations on its northern side. The landscape displays distinctive geological structures that characterize the terrain and shape the visual appearance of the peak.

History

The mountain became part of a military training area in 1938 when the Wehrmacht established the Wildflecken grounds, now operated by NATO forces. This military use has shaped access to the peak over the decades and continues to define the character of the location.

Culture

The mountain is recognized in the region for a distinctive phonolite column on its northern side, connected to local folklore about a giant named Kuprian. This natural formation shapes the landscape and draws the attention of visitors who pass through the area.

Practical

Access to the summit is not permitted for visitors since it lies within an active military training ground operated by the German Armed Forces. You can view the mountain from outside the training area and learn about its geological features without entering the restricted zone.

Did you know?

A 3.40-meter-high summit cross, crafted by a local metalworker, was installed at the peak during a dedication in September 2010. This cross serves as a notable landmark visible from certain vantage points outside the military grounds and reflects a local tradition.
