Kloster Zoffingen

Kloster Zoffingen is a Dominican monastery near Lake Constance featuring traditional religious architecture centered around a chapel dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria. The buildings reflect the layout of a working monastic community with residential, worship, and functional spaces arranged around courtyards.

The monastery originated in the 13th century when a Beguine community relocated from Wil to Konstanz and settled there before 1257. The site underwent significant transformations during the 19th century when parts of the church were adapted for other uses, though the complex maintained its monastic character.

The monastery served as a center of learning where generations of students received education and women held meaningful roles in community life. This teaching mission shaped the social fabric of the city for over two centuries.

The grounds now operate as a nursing care facility operated by Caritas, which means access to the property may be limited or restricted. It is advisable to contact ahead if you wish to visit any part of the site to ensure you respect residents' privacy and facility operations.

A striking feature is the meditation room located in a former wine cellar, creating an unexpected blend of monastic practice and historical structure. This creative repurposing demonstrates how the site has adapted its spaces while preserving layers of its past.
